In this activity, children draw on watercolor paper using a white crayon, then paint over their drawing with watercolors to watch hidden lines and shapes magically appear. What starts as a blank page slowly transforms as color spreads, inviting curiosity, surprise, and creative exploration.
The white crayon is made from wax, which repels water. When watery paint is brushed across the page, it can’t stick to the waxy lines, so the crayon drawing stays visible while the color moves around it. As children paint, they begin to notice how water flows, how colors blend, and how materials behave differently when they interact.
